Yet I had never faced the difficult times and decisions that she has been facing, and I'm not sure I would have handled them as well. The last time I saw Barbara she was in the hospital. She looked so frail. Her daughter was by her side. A few months ago the daughter called needing some assistance so I drove her around town on errands. As I returned her to her apartment, I attempted to encourage her and tell her she was doing a good job. She said to me that she couldn't imagine doing it any other way...that she couldn't imagine not being there for her mother.
