Egg Story

This is not really an Easter story, but since everyone is talking about eggs and rabbits and such, I thought I'd tell this story.

You know that Jesse was not always a farm girl. First she was a mountain girl. She grew up climbing mountains, riding horses, skiing. She raised a goat, a sheep, calves, and lots of dogs and cats. When we moved to OK, she became a real farm hand. She helped work cattle. She bottle fed calves. She raised chicks and pigs. She could ride a horse like nobodies business. An yet, she retained a bit of naivety. At one point, we had quite a few laying hens and were getting lots of eggs, which we sold and gave away to friends. Sometimes I boiled up several eggs to have as needed (I was on a low carb diet and they made a good snack). I would just set the boiled eggs in the fridge on a shelf, but not in an egg carton. It was summertime, when a friend of ours asked Jes if he could have four dozen eggs to take on a family vacation. No problema. Jesse gathered up eggs in cartons to take to our friend. She even gathered the eggs off the shelf in the fridge - the hard boiled eggs.  When our friend came home from his vacation, he went to Jesse and told her that one morning he had been cooking breakfast. He had reached in the carton and grabbed an egg. But when he went to crack it, it was hard boiled. So he tried another egg. Same thing. Thinking that Jesse had pranked him, he told Jesse how funny it was that he had four hard boiled egg.  Later, he laughingly told us that Jesse had no idea what he was talking about. So to tease her he said, "It must have been so hot in OK, that it boiled the eggs." Jesse looked at him in all seriousness and said, "Really?"  Our friend laughed and laughed at Jesse. He teased her about that for a long time.

The sad part of this story is that a few years later, our friend was killed in a truck accident. To this day, I think of him often -  laughing and teasing Jesse.
