4th Festivities

I do love the 4th of July and all the festivities that go with it. For years, the parade in Red River was the high-light of the summer. Rarely did we just watch the parade go by, but we were always active participants. If you are not IN the parade, you miss seeing all the people who line the streets to watch. The people are much more fun than the actual parade. I've built and ridden in many floats. I've ridden many horses through the noise, banners, and balloons and lived to tell the tale - And I do have some tales! Here is a photo stolen from some one's Facebook (hey! Public domain and all that) of RR on parade day this year. The population swells from a few hundred residents and maybe a few hundred tourist to thousands of tourists. Yep, I have some great memories of the 4th in RR.
Now I'm racking up memories of 4th of July in Loco, OK. We went to the big Fireworks and Lawnmower Races again this year. It just keeps getting better and better, although the crowd is not as big in Loco as it is in RR. The weather is not as cool and wonderful either. We had a bit of rain (like a two inch down pour) just as the festivities kicked off, but the sun came out and the show went on. The lawnmower race was more competitive this year with more competitors. In the pic on the left is Alex on our old lawnmower and Jesse M. on the red mower - notice his Mohawk - goes perfect with his lawnmower. The turtle race was a huge hit this year with lots more turtles. The turtles are the GG's favorite part. The fireworks show was awesome. It is my favorite part of the 4th festivities. RR never had fireworks due to the dry mountains and threat of fire. I love it when people watching the fireworks squeal, laugh out loud, and cheer. It is like everyone becomes a kid again. Here is Mom with Coco's new baby - speaking of kids - isn't she a cutie!?

I need one of those Mohawk thingies for MY helmet...

I'm thinking memories are much more vivid and memorable when you participate in something rather than just observe it. Red River certainly looks like "the place to be" on the Fourth... except for the lack of fireworks.

This is the first year I've missed my "private showing" of P-Ville's fireworks, in that I put a lawn chair on my car-carrier, pop a couple o' beers, sit back, relax, and enjoy the show. Which is QUITE good, considering P-Ville's small-town 15K population.

This year we (SN1 Fambly and I) watched some sort of neighborhood consortium's fireworks display from SN1's verandah. I say "consortium" because there HAD to be a thousand bucks worth of fireworks shot off and I'm NOT exaggerating. It was quite the show.... not as good as some years past, but better than most. It was the company, yanno?

Buck, You do need a Mohawk thang on your helmet. There have been some times when Toby and I sat out in the yard in the dark watching fireworks - just the two of us. It was a good time.
