Politico

With all the political speeches going on, I thought about writing something political. Those of you who know me are rolling your eyes and thinking, "Guera!" That's okay, even us blondies have our thoughts. Here are mine.

I'd like to hear one politician talk about fixing the problems at the Mexico border and not just "building a fence" which I think is just a band-aid and no solution. We don't talk about building a fence on the Canadian border. Why is that? Probably because Canadians aren't pouring across the border. They are happy and content with their own country. They have a good economy. They have a good education system and health care. And possibly it is because we have similar cultures (nice way of putting it). So it seems to me if you want to stop our southern neighbors from illegally coming to the US, those are the problems that need addressing. It seems to me that the Monroe Doctrine and Big Stick ideology have not done much for the Americas. We can spend lots of money, blood, sweat, and tears in countries like Iraq and Afghanistan trying to give them a better economy, culture, schools, government, etc. but we do very little for our close neighbors. How can we expect to clean up and police the world when our own backyard stinks?

So what is the hold up on progress in the southern Americas? Hmm, could it be drugs? Ah, now that is the problem we don't want to see or consider. We stick our heads back in the sand. And drug cartels and other villains continue to run countries, and people continue to pour across our border - not to mention the drug problems right here. Okay, that is just a sample of what is on my mind concerning illegal immigration. What do you think?

There are certain areas on military bases that are surrounded with chain link fences topped with barbed-wire. There are also signs on those fences, posted at 50-foot intervals, that read "WARNING! Use of deadly force authorized." Climb THAT fence and see how far you get before you're shot...

I'm thinking we might wanna try that approach at the border.

Wanna get rid of drug cartels? Legalize the drugs. Poof! They're gone. I know... too easy, and it would put all those DEA guys out o' work.

Buck,
Toby and I have discussed the legalizing drugs and I think that may be part of the answer. Did I just put that in writing?

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that we stop giving them so much free stuff. Cut out the welfare checks, food stamps, free health care, free housing, and free education, and that'll remove much of the incentive for them to come here.

I agree, though, that fences alone won't work. Like Rick Perry said, "Build a 30 foot fence, and they'll build a 35 foot ladder." We need a combination of a fence and an adequate number of armed border patrol agents to do the trick.

I don't agree that legalizing drugs will put the DEA agents out of business. They'll just shift their focus to enforcing the endless regulations the government is sure to impose.

Legalize drugs? I just watched part of a travel show about Amsterdam. It did nothing to influence me toward legalization. It had quite the opposite effect.

I'm not for legalizing drugs I agree with the Amsterdam thing. We just need to enforce the laws. How much can we give away?

Pretty much what Buck said.
