Art Students

Recently, I started my little girls art class again. Yesterday was our second class. It went well enough. I can see improvement with several of them. With some, I'm not sure there will ever be improvement unless they get more interested in art. Some of them are just young. They just don't see that something is wrong with their art. We worked on painting color - tones, value, shades, etc. Some get it; some don't. They try, and that is good.

In the past, I let the girls start taking art at age 12. It was just too young. Last year I had decided to not take on any younger students - thinking 16 would be a better age. But then mothers tell me how great their child is at art and how they really want to take art now and that they are serious about their art and how they draw all the time, etc. Usually I say, "Good, let them draw. If they are still interested in a few years, I will let them take art." Unfortunately, I bent. A new student came yesterday - young. I had seen her drawings, and she's good - has definite talent. But I was not wrong. Twelve is very young. By the end of class yesterday, I could see her frustration. Painting and color were very difficult for her. She was a good sport, but she flipped her painting over and started drawing as if to show the older girls she really did have talent. The older girls were encouraging to her - they are some sweet girls. We will see how it goes.

Today is for me. I'm going to paint with the Painted Ladies. Or we might visit a lot and catch up on each others life. Whatever - I'm looking forward to my time with them, and hoping for a painting to share with you.

The first bit is the story of the world and life. The second bit makes it worthwhile... assuming you meet more folks who try rather than just go with the flow.

Twelve is pretty young. On the other hand, I always enjoyed drawing, but painting never interested me. I can't blame that on my age, either.

Buck,
I've always been a "go for it" sort of person, and I kind of expect it from others.

Becky,
I understand about drawing and painting. But this is a class - these girls need to do what the teacher says to do or why take the class.

We're hoping for a painting that you can share, too!
