Brighten Beach

A few days ago, I mentioned starting a beach painting. I found this picture online. I liked it because of the light and shadows. Since water is not my thang, I also wanted to give it a try. Painting water is difficult for most people, but especially for those of us who know little about it. I'm a mountain girl for sure. I didn't even learn to swim until I was a teenager. I also wanted to experiment with color. And the photo was just fun. Did you know that you can google just about anything? Google "kids on the beach" and you get lots of photos. I once went looking for some photos of women to practice my life drawing. Be careful there.

Anyway, I don't like my waves very much. And I got in a hurry on the painting. One of my art teachers once told me I would be better if I was not so messy. Yada Yada.

I have a new project coming up. A friend ask me to paint a mural at her barbershop. I think I will try to document my steps. Could be interesting.

Maybe for a mural them, have a bunch of skinheads in ratty clothes waiting in line on a bench for their $5 buzz-cut adjustment, admiring a handsome man getting a $40 haircut, with nice clothes. A bunch of women looking-in through the plate glass window, all with a look in their eye like they will be the lucky one to ride in his BMW with "I love oil" bumper sticker half out of the scene. The barber looking at the women with pity, as it is her husband in the chair, who is reading a travel brochure to Machu Picchu.

Actually that sounds like a good mural. My young barber friend is the girl in the white dress with green high-heels. This time when I paint her she wants me to include her tattoos.

Oui, la belle femme, Yea... scratch the BMW, I'm thinking that's not her style. I'm also thinking her foot tattoo is not the final ink. Sounds like a big project, and yes, documenting it will be a neat addition to your blog!

I like this painting. For a land lubber, not bad. You will know for the next one. Even though the waves went all across, you could have a break behind the kids like the top wave so it would be blue behind them. There are always "could have" ideas. :) I love the over all feel and the poses/gestures of the kids. Makes me want to be there!

You're right! I should have broken up the wave or moved it away from his head. Once I put down that masking, it was a done deal. I tried to make the best of it. I took a class with Steve Rogers a few years ago. He does some great water in watercolor. I learned a bit about reflections, but not so much about waves.

I don't think it is right or wrong, the little girls hair would stand out more. For another painting in the future. I really like your painting! As I said, it is so welcoming and natural looking. I would like to be there, especially the last few days. Sigh.......
